Advantages of a 20-Foot Conex Box

  • Strong: A 20 foot box can handle heavy equipment, building materials, and palletized goods with ease.
  • Great storage space for the space they occupy: They’re compact enough to squeeze into spaces a 40-footer just can’t, but have plenty of room to keep your inventory secure.
  • Easy to place and stack: Sure, they stack, but they’re also small enough to maneuver into place wherever you need them. You’ll maximize ground space in no time.
  • Versatile: Goes virtually anywhere since they can transfer cleanly from truck to rail yard to ocean vessel and beyond.
  • Easy to move: Since a 20ft container is small enough to travel on public roads, they require little if any special permitting in most counties.

Buying a 20ft Conex Box

You know the deal with a 20ft Steel Box: it’s the workhorse of our lineup — big enough for most jobs, without some of the placement issues that come with a larger container. But before you buy there are a couple things you should know.

Clearance for Delivery – This one’s important. Measure your delivery location first. We’ll need about 16 feet of vertical clearance and around 60 feet of flat, level ground for the tractor-trailer to back in and unload. It’s a big truck! Our hydraulic tilt bed lifts the Steel Box container off the truck and lowers it onto the ground. If you give us room to operate we’ll get you unloaded fast.

Why Buy New? – Delivery is handled differently than used boxes because of how they’re transported. A brand new Steel Box arrives damage free and factory warranted. Your box also has many years of service left in it.

Price vs. Value – This is easy: new will always cost more than used. But a used box can come with years of wear and tear you can’t see until it becomes an issue. When you buy new, you know your box can provide you with decades of worry-free service. Simple? We try to keep our pricing that way, too. You’ll never hear about hidden fees or fees for add-ons from us.

Do I Need Permits? – This can vary from city to city and county to county. Reach out to your local permit offices to verify if there are any permits you need before you buy. In most cases, this only applies to those who are converting the Conex box into a living space, an ADU, or a workspace.

Delivery Fees – Price varies based on the distance from our warehouse to your building site. A standard or High Cube deliver for about the same price. We have the same equipment to unload both sizes, and the weights are similar enough that it doesn’t affect our cost.

20ft Conex Box FAQs

How much does a new 20 foot Conex box cost?
Price varies by where you are, how far our warehouse is from you, and what type of delivery you require. Our goal is to make this easy — enter your ZIP code into the box above and we’ll show you available inventory and a price delivered to you.

How much space should I clear for delivery?
We ask our drivers to have about 12 feet by 35 feet of clearance, with around 16 feet of overhead space. Ensure it’s a flat, cleared space with room for the box to rest.

Do I need to prepare my property for Conex box delivery?
You should clear and level the ground where the container will rest. Also make sure there aren’t any wires, tree branches, or other obstacles in the way.

How do I order delivery of a Conex box?
We deliver all across Texas and into neighboring states to both residential and commercial customers. Visit our homepage and check out the ready-to-ship inventory.

Are Conex boxes wind tight and waterproof?
Before we ship every box we ensure they’re wind- and watertight. We check the doors properly open and close too, securing with the latch.

Can you customize a Conex box?
Any way you want. We can install windows, doors, vents, insulation, wiring; cut openings and trim around doors/windows; build shelves; and do custom paint work. Tell us your vision.

What are Conex boxes good for?
We mention some uses above. Here are some additional possibilities.

Can you pre-install floors, windows, and doors on a Conex box?
Yes — we can have floors, windows, and doors pre-installed prior to delivery.

What are some uses for a Conex box?
Just about anything. Because Conex containers can come customized to fit so many needs, they end up being used for nearly any job you can think up. Here are some examples of Conex box builds we’ve completed.

Can Conex boxes be painted?
Of course. We can match your company logo or ranch colors.

Can I live in a Conex box?
Sure thing. Many folks do, and they frequently make them into temporary office space, too.

How much does it cost to rent a Conex box?
There’s no rental fee when you buy a container. However, if you only need it for a short term we do offer the ability to rent containers.

How much does a 20 foot Conex box weigh?
An empty 20ft standard Conex box weighs 2.5 tons or around 5,000 pounds. A 20ft High Cube is slightly heavier.

Can Conex boxes be used as a pool house?
Yes! They make great shed homes, workshops, backyard toolsheds (commonly known as barndos), and really any small build you can imagine.

Can you build a home with Conex boxes?
Absolutely. Container homes and small builds are two of the most popular uses for Conex containers. The box gives you a reinforced steel shell to work around; from there you add windows, doors, insulation, electrics, plumbing, furniture, and whatever else your heart desires to turn it into a livable space.

Can used Conex boxes be delivered to me?
Yes, we deliver used and new conex boxes all over central Texas.

How long will a Conex box last?
25+ years if properly maintained. Conex boxes are made from Corten steel, which was designed to withstand decades of abuse from salt water. It’ll last you just about as long on dry land, too. Inspect your box yearly and paint over any small rust spots that might appear.

Will one fit on my property?
The least you’ll need for overhead clearance is a High Cube delivery. Make sure you allow for about 16 feet of space above where the box will sit. Each box is only about 8 feet wide though, so they typically fit in most properties width-wise.

How much height does a 20 foot Conex box have?
A standard 20ft Conex box is 8 ft 6 in tall. A High Cube 20 is 9 ft 6 in tall.

Do I need a special foundation to place a Conex box on?
No. You don’t need anything special for a Conex box to sit on. If you want to pour a concrete pad, that’ll work too. Just make sure that wherever you put it can support the weight of the box.

Can you get a 20 foot Conex box with windows included?
Yes — most windows can be installed at delivery.

Will Conex boxes leak?
Water isn’t likely to leak into your box. The seams on a Conex box are sealed to withstand huge amounts of water pressure without leaking. However, if a box does start rusting through and breaking down, that’s when leakage could occur.

How thick is the metal on a Conex Box?
The most common thicknesses are .344 and .438. This refers to thickness of the steel plate that makes up the Conex box.

How much weight can be placed inside a Conex box?
Inside a 20ft container you can place about 52,000 pounds of cargo before it reaches max capacity.

Will a Conex box fit in my driveway?
That depends on your driveway. You’ll need about 16 feet of head clearance, but the box only measures around 8 feet in width. That means they should be able to fit in most driveways if you’re concerned about width. Just beware of low hanging garage doors, hoops, etc.

How heavy is it?
That depends on the size of the box you want. Find out the weight of a 20ft above.

How much weight can I put on top of a Conex box?
The interior floor typically supports up to 480 pounds per square foot.

What is the weight limit on a Conex box?
A loaded 20ft container can support around 52,000 pounds of cargo. Be mindful there’s also a weight limit for the ground it’s sitting on, too. The ground bearing load is at about 480 pounds per square foot.
